Sequences from a Volatile Now
April 17-May 19 2018

Matthias Bitzer’s work on display at the Almine Rech Gallery was a varied and engaging collection of pieces using a range of materials and techniques. Both sculptural and two dimensional works were included, each showing an understanding of space and a manipulation of the area it had been placed in.

A piece of particular interest is Bitzer’s The ulterior howl, a mixed media work that combined figurative, geometric and constructed form to create a sculptural drawing that expands from the wall. I took several points from this piece in reference to my own work, particularly the combination of very different media. In the past i have limited myself by my use of materials and have consistently stuck to what i have known well, The ulterior howl is not only a show of skill but of several skills brought together successfully. This is something i hope to emulate.
